Why Women’s Shirts Fasten on the Left — and Men’s on the Right: The Intriguing Story Behind a Common Daily Practice

The difference is believed to have originated among the wealthy classes in Europe during the Middle Ages and Renaissance periods. At the time, buttons were considered luxury items. Rich women often had servants who helped them dress each morning. Since most people are right-handed, placing buttons on the left side of women’s garments made it easier for servants standing opposite them to fasten the clothing.

Men, on the other hand, typically dressed themselves. Having buttons on the right side made it easier for right-handed men to button their own shirts and jackets quickly and comfortably.
