Trump’s role as LIV Golf host renews scrutiny over conflicts of interest

Concerns Over Foreign Influence

At the center of the controversy is Saudi Arabia’s involvement. LIV Golf is financed by the kingdom’s sovereign wealth fund, overseen by Saudi Crown Prince. Human rights groups and some lawmakers have accused Saudi Arabia of using sports investments to improve its international image, a practice often referred to as “sportswashing.”

Critics argue that Trump’s close alignment with LIV Golf could create perceptions that foreign governments are gaining access or influence through commercial relationships with a major U.S. political figure.

Ethics watchdogs have pointed out that presidents and presidential candidates traditionally attempt to separate personal financial interests from public responsibilities. Trump, however, has long rejected the idea that he must fully divest from his businesses, maintaining ownership of the Trump Organization during and after his presidency.
