The vision for a post-Maduro Venezuela discussed in January talks never touched on a role for prominent opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Corina Machado, according to a Qatari source who spoke with CNN.

Machado has become one of the most recognizable faces of Venezuela’s opposition movement in recent years. After being barred from running in elections, she continued to rally support both inside and outside the country, eventually receiving the Nobel Peace Prize for her advocacy of democratic reform and human rights.

The report suggests that U.S. officials and Venezuelan intermediaries instead explored transitional arrangements involving existing government figures, including Vice President Delcy Rodríguez. Sources familiar with the talks said Qatar acted as a mediator between Washington and Caracas during several rounds of negotiations.
