The cruise ship, which has not yet been publicly identified by authorities, reportedly alerted Spanish officials after several passengers began showing symptoms consistent with hantavirus infection during the voyage. Medical personnel onboard initiated preliminary containment procedures while the ship altered course toward the Canary Islands, where specialized medical support is available.

Hantavirus is a rare but potentially serious disease primarily spread through contact with infected rodents or their droppings. Human-to-human transmission is considered extremely uncommon in most strains, but health experts are treating the situation with caution until laboratory tests confirm the exact nature of the infections.
