Did you know that when a dog smells your private area, it isn’t being rude at all, but is actually detecting complex chemical signals?

Dogs experience life primarily through their sense of smell. In fact, a dog’s nose is estimated to be tens of thousands of times more sensitive than a human’s. While people rely heavily on sight and conversation, dogs gather information through scent. Every smell tells them a story.

Human bodies produce chemical signals called pheromones and other scent compounds. These are especially concentrated in areas where sweat glands are more active, including the groin and underarm regions. When a dog sniffs these areas, it is collecting information about a person’s age, mood, health, gender, and even emotional state.
