11 Foods You Should Avoid Putting in a Slow Cooker (And What to Use Instead!)

1. Dairy (Milk, Cream, Soft Cheese)

Dairy tends to curdle or separate after long cooking times.

Use instead: Add milk, cream, or cheese during the last 15–30 minutes of cooking. For a creamy base, try coconut milk—it holds up better over time.

2. Seafood

Fish and shellfish cook quickly and can turn rubbery or fall apart in a slow cooker.

Use instead: Add seafood near the end (about 10–20 minutes before serving) or cook it separately and combine just before eating.

3. Pasta

Pasta absorbs too much liquid and becomes mushy.

Use instead: Cook pasta separately and mix it in just before serving. If you must add it, do so in the final 20–30 minutes.
