Why We Care About Others’ Opinions

Human beings are social creatures. From childhood, we learn about ourselves partly through the reactions of others. Compliments can boost our confidence, while criticism can leave lasting impressions. As a result, many of us become sensitive to how we are viewed by friends, family, coworkers, and even strangers.

Seeking feedback is not necessarily a bad thing. Constructive opinions can help us grow, improve our relationships, and become more self-aware. The challenge arises when we allow the opinions of others to define our self-worth.
