Curiosity quickly turned into a mini investigation.
We took photos and began searching online for possible explanations. The internet offered dozens of theories, ranging from harmless household issues to bizarre natural phenomena. Some suggestions were so outlandish that they only made us more confused.
Eventually, we discovered the answer.
The mysterious blob was actually a water-absorbing crystal cluster that had expanded dramatically after being exposed to moisture.
Months earlier, one of our children had been using decorative water beads for a school project. Apparently, a few had rolled behind a cabinet and gone unnoticed. During our vacation, humidity and small amounts of moisture allowed them to absorb water and swell into a giant gelatinous mass.
