A rush for something rare
Word spread quickly through the line that the store had just received a small batch of limited-edition scratch-off lottery tickets—one of those promotions that attracts sudden, intense attention. A few people stepped out of line to check. Others stayed put, unsure if it was worth losing their place.
She moved forward abruptly, cutting past several customers, eyes fixed on the counter where the tickets were being handed out. In the process, she bumped into my mother-in-law—hard enough to knock the cartons from her hands.
They hit the floor with a sharp, unmistakable crack.
