According to witnesses, the devastating crash happened just moments after Anthony stepped outside to help his elderly mother carry groceries into their building.
Authorities say the suspected driver lost control of the vehicle before jumping the curb and crashing directly into pedestrians gathered near the sidewalk. Chaos erupted instantly as bystanders screamed and rushed to help victims lying in the street.
Emergency crews arrived within minutes, but despite life-saving efforts, Anthony later died from his injuries.
“There was debris everywhere,” one eyewitness recalled. “People were crying and trying to help. Nobody could believe what had just happened.”
Friends say Anthony had lived in the neighborhood for years and was known for helping anyone who needed it. Whether carrying groceries for elderly residents or checking on neighbors during storms, many described him as “the heart of the block.”
His death has left the local community devastated.
The tragedy has also reignited anger over reckless and impaired driving in crowded urban areas. Safety advocates continue calling for stricter enforcement and tougher penalties for drivers accused of getting behind the wheel while intoxicated.
They are grieving a son, a friend, and a man whose ordinary act of kindness ended in unimaginable tragedy.
