Subway crime down, but underground murders, robberies surge: NYPD data

NYPD says overall crime trends remain positive

City officials and police leaders maintain that the broader crime picture is improving. The NYPD recently announced historically low citywide murder and shooting numbers during the first months of 2026, crediting expanded patrol deployments and targeted enforcement strategies.

The department has also increased officer presence throughout the transit system, including additional daily subway patrols intended to deter violent incidents and reassure passengers. Officials argue that last year was among the safest periods for the subway system outside of pandemic-era ridership declines.

Robberies remain a major concern

Despite reductions in some felony categories, robbery trends continue moving upward underground. Transit robberies reportedly climbed more than 20% earlier this year before moderating slightly in recent weeks. Law enforcement sources say many incidents involve repeat offenders, juveniles, or crimes targeting sleeping passengers.

Experts warn that crowded summer travel conditions could place additional strain on the system if enforcement efforts are not maintained.
