“Our triplet sister passed away when we were only eleven. On our twenty-first birthday, Mom gave us a box Nora had left behind. Nothing could have prepared us for what we found inside.

The next was marked “13th Birthday.”

Then “14th.”

Then “15th.”

The envelopes continued all the way to “21st Birthday.”

We stared in disbelief.

Before she passed away, Nora had written a letter for every birthday she knew she would miss.

As we opened them one by one, it felt as though our sister was speaking directly to us across time.

Some letters were funny. She joked about school crushes, future boyfriends, and embarrassing family moments. Others contained advice she imagined we might need as teenagers. She encouraged us to stay close, to be kind to ourselves, and never let grief stop us from living fully.

One envelope contained friendship bracelets she had made in the hospital.

Another held a list of dreams she hoped we would accomplish together.

By the time we reached the final letter marked “21st Birthday,” tears were streaming down all three of our faces.

In it, Nora wrote about how much she loved us and how she hoped we would never define our lives by loss. She wanted us to celebrate, travel, laugh, and build the futures she knew she would never see herself.
