Normally I’m pretty good about our local spiders but this one has me stumped. This is the third one I’ve found in my house this summer.

While many people panic when spotting unfamiliar spiders, specialists note that the majority of household spiders are harmless to humans and actually help reduce pest populations by feeding on flies, mosquitoes, and other insects.

Still, identifying spiders correctly can be difficult without close inspection. Features such as body shape, leg length, color patterns, and eye arrangement are often needed to determine the exact species. In some cases, lighting or camera quality can make harmless spiders appear more intimidating than they really are.
