A Difficult Conversation

After my father remarried, life at home changed.

My stepmother managed most of the household finances, and while we were never wealthy, we generally had what we needed.

When prom season arrived, I nervously approached her about buying a dress.

I wasn’t asking for anything extravagant.

Just something simple that would help me feel special for one night.

She listened quietly before shaking her head.

“I’m sorry,” she said. “There’s no room in the budget for that right now.”

I tried not to show how hurt I felt.

Part of me understood.

Money was tight.

Still, watching my friends excitedly shop for dresses while I had no plan was heartbreaking.
