My 12-Year-Old Son Helped His Wheelchair-Using Friend Enjoy a Camping Trip — The Next Day, I Got an Urgent Call from the School

The Camping Trip

My son, Ethan, had been excited about the school’s annual camping trip for weeks.

The sixth-grade class would spend two days outdoors hiking trails, participating in team-building activities, and learning survival skills. Like most kids his age, he couldn’t stop talking about campfires, tents, and spending time with friends.

One of those friends was Liam.

Liam used a wheelchair due to a medical condition, but he was every bit as adventurous and determined as the other students. Despite occasional accessibility challenges, he rarely let his circumstances stop him from participating.

Still, I worried.

Camping trips aren’t always designed with mobility needs in mind.

I hoped everything would go smoothly.
