The island, located in Plymouth Sound in Devon, England, has centuries of military and cultural significance. Originally fortified in the 16th century to defend against French and Spanish attacks, the stronghold later served as a prison, military base, religious center, and even an adventure training camp. Today, much of the island remains protected as a heritage site, with underground tunnels, old gun emplacements, and several Grade II-listed buildings still standing.
