When It Might Be a Warning Sign
Persistent or sudden swelling—especially if it affects one leg more than the other—can indicate underlying health problems.
Other conditions linked to leg swelling include:
- Fluid builds up when the heart isn’t pumping properly
- The body struggles to remove excess fluid
- Changes in protein levels can lead to swelling
In rare cases, swelling may also be associated with tumors or cancers that obstruct blood or lymph flow—but this is far less common than other causes.
