Hantavirus is gaining ground in the US, startling researchers: ‘Widespread and complex virus’

Hantavirus is best known for causing Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS), a severe respiratory illness that can rapidly become life-threatening. The virus is typically transmitted to humans through contact with infected rodent urine, droppings, or saliva, especially when contaminated particles become airborne in enclosed spaces such as cabins, sheds, garages, and barns.

Researchers say recent surveillance data has revealed hantavirus strains in more regions of the country than expected, including areas not traditionally considered high-risk.

“This is a widespread and complex virus ecosystem,” one researcher noted, emphasizing that multiple rodent species across different climates appear capable of carrying various strains of hantavirus.
