Found this hard, foam-like brown structure attached to a fence post in the backyard. I was about to scrape it off but hesitated. What is it?

🐣 What Is an Ootheca?

An ootheca is a protective egg casing created by female mantises to house their eggs. When first formed, it has a soft, foam-like texture, but it quickly hardens into a sturdy, ridged structure—often brown or tan in color. This casing helps shield the eggs from weather and predators.

Inside, there can be dozens to hundreds of tiny mantis eggs, all developing safely until they hatch.
