Common Plants and Outdoor Practices That Can Draw Snakes In

One of the biggest factors that attracts snakes is dense ground cover. Thick shrubs, tall grass, ivy, and overgrown garden beds provide cool, shaded areas where snakes can hide from predators and extreme heat. Plants such as juniper bushes, heavy ornamental grasses, and low-spreading vines are especially appealing because they offer shelter close to the ground.

Rock gardens and decorative stone piles can also become snake-friendly environments. The gaps between rocks create ideal spaces for snakes to rest, regulate body temperature, or hide while hunting prey. Woodpiles and stacked firewood near homes may have the same effect, especially when left undisturbed for long periods.

Outdoor water sources are another major attraction. Birdbaths, small
