Bitten by a Snake? Here’s the First Thing You Must Do — It Could Save Your Life

Stay Calm and Limit Movement

It sounds simple, but it’s the most important step: stay as still and calm as possible.

When a venomous snake bites, the toxin often spreads through the lymphatic system. Moving around—especially walking or running—can accelerate that spread. Keeping your body still helps slow it down.

Try to:

  • Sit or lie down immediately
  • Keep the bitten limb as still as possible
  • Position it at or slightly below heart level

Your goal is to reduce circulation speed, not increase it.
