An ancient Japanese manual technique to eliminate anxiety and stress in seconds

Often described as the “art of harmonizing the body’s energy,” Jin Shin Jyutsu is a gentle self-help practice that dates back centuries. The technique involves using the hands to apply light pressure to specific fingers, which practitioners believe are connected to different emotional states and energy pathways within the body.

Although modern science does not fully support all of the traditional explanations behind the practice, many people report that it helps them feel more centered, relaxed, and mindful during stressful moments.

How the Technique Works

According to Jin Shin Jyutsu traditions, each finger is associated with a particular emotion:

  • Thumb: Worry and anxiety
  • Index finger: Fear
  • Middle finger: Anger and frustration
  • Ring finger: Sadness and grief
  • Little finger: Stress and self-doubt

The technique is remarkably simple. To address a particular emotion, gently wrap the fingers of one hand around the corresponding finger on the opposite hand. Hold it for one to three minutes while breathing slowly and deeply.

For example, if you’re feeling anxious or overwhelmed, hold your thumb with the opposite hand. Focus on your breathing and notice any changes in your body’s tension levels.
