A Dream Come True

Over the next few weeks, Sophie transformed.

She smiled more.

She laughed more.

She spent time planning her dress and imagining the night ahead.

Melissa hadn’t seen her this happy in years.

Even more surprising, Ethan seemed genuinely kind.

He checked in regularly, discussed prom plans with Sophie, and treated her with a level of respect that Melissa hadn’t expected.

For the first time in a long time, Melissa allowed herself to believe that perhaps things were finally changing.

Maybe people were growing up.

Maybe Ethan saw something in Sophie that others had overlooked.

Maybe kindness was winning.

The Perfect Night

Prom night arrived.

Sophie looked beautiful.

When Ethan arrived at their house to pick her up, he brought flowers and complimented her dress.

Melissa fought back tears.

As they posed for pictures, Sophie looked happier than she’d ever looked before.

When they left for the dance, Melissa stood in the doorway feeling overwhelmed with gratitude.

Her daughter finally had the night she’d always deserved.

Or so she thought.

The Accusation

The following morning, everything changed.

Melissa was making coffee when Sophie stormed into the kitchen.

Her face was pale.

Her eyes were filled with anger.

“How could you do that?” she demanded.

Melissa stared at her in confusion.

“Do what?”

“Pay him.”

The room went silent.

Melissa felt her stomach drop.

“What are you talking about?”

“Ethan told me.”

Melissa’s heart pounded.

“He said someone paid him to take me to prom. He wouldn’t tell me who at first, but he said it was obvious. He said no one else would have a reason.”

Sophie was trembling now.

“You paid him, didn’t you?”
